What determines self-worth? 4 ways to boost confidence
When we have high self-worth, we feel like we belong in the world and inside our own skin. We like ourselves and know and value our strengths.
“High self-worth has wide-ranging positive consequences, including better social relationships. It feeds back into the feeling that we are, according to Merriam-Webster “a good person who deserves to be treated with respect”
While the positive and loving impact of family and friends on a child are a huge part of what determines self worth, we can also boost our own sense of self-esteem and confidence at any point. Here’s how.
Spend time with those who love you
When we’re surrounded by people who deeply understand, accept and love us, our confidence naturally benefits because feeling a sense of belonging is crucial to high self-worth. We start to see ourselves through their eyes – worthy of admiration and respect. Prioritize time spent with loved ones who you can be your true self around to remind yourself how valuable you really are.
Make time for your skills
Think about what you love doing and what you’re good at, either through journaling or speaking with a trusted friend or family member, then make time to do those things regularly (or even every day if you can!). Feeling capable and competent – whether that’s in cooking, gardening or taking pictures – is one of the most effective ways to boost confidence and self-worth.
Eat well
Learning about nutrition and eating healthy foods is amazing for improving body confidence, mood and self-worth: when you feel physically good from giving your body the nutrients it needs, your mental state improves alongside it. Try ‘eating the rainbow’ and filling your plate with a variety of different fruit, veggies, grains and proteins to fill up on lots of different vitamins and minerals.
Focus on enjoyment
Exercise is another proven confidence-booster, but be sure to make time for activities you enjoy doing – rather than workouts you think you ‘should’ do – as you’ll be more likely to make it a habit that way. Whether you love dancing, jogging, Pilates, lifting weights or long walks with friends, any physical activity helps improve confidence and self-worth. It will all help you feel more empowered.
