What is hyperhidrosis?
Sweating is one of the natural processes we use to cool down our bodies. However, some people experience an excessive amount of sweating, even when their body temperature is normal. Excessive sweating is a disorder called hyperhidrosis. The Canadian Dermatology Association (CDA) defines Hyperhidrosis as, “A disorder that defines individuals who sweat more than the body would normally need to maintain optimal temperature.”
According to the CDA, Hyperhidrosis affects approximately 3% of the population – around 950,000 Canadians – of whom 300,000 have a severe form of the excessive sweating disorder. Hyperhidrosis can be uncomfortable and even embarrassing. Severe forms of the disorder can affect one’s productivity at work, confidence in social settings, overall well-being and quality of life. What people may not know is that there are treatment options available. If you think you have hyperhidrosis, it would be a good idea to contact your dermatologist.
