Know the signs of a dry scalp.

The signs of a dry scalp aren’t too mysterious—generally you’ll be experiencing an uncomfortable dryness and tightness on your scalp, and you might notice some visible skin flaking, too.

  • But don’t confuse it with dandruff.

But don’t confuse it with dandruff.

Dandruff is usually caused by a tiny yeast-like microorganism that grows on oily areas of the scalp. These microorganisms can produce irritants. When the scalp's natural barrier is weak and unhealthy, the microorganisms cause the skin cells to shed faster than usual, leaving larger flakes. A dry scalp boils down to the scalp losing too much of its natural moisture. This can be due to things like cold weather, a buildup of hair products or even dehydration on thicker hair. It doesn’t always lead to dandruff, but it can cause flakes, too (though they’re much smaller and fall away more easily).

  • Decrease how often you wash hair.

Decrease how often you wash hair.

Washing your hair a little less is one of the simplest dry scalp remedies: cleansing hair too often can remove some naturally moisturizing oils. Washing your hair and scalp cleansing two to three times a week helps to keep your hair feeling fresh. Plus, a routine to care for your scalp will keep it feeling healthy as well.

  • Change your shampoo.

    Change your shampoo.

If you’re prone to scalp conditions like dryness, you need a gentle shampoo that won’t strip your hair or your scalp of moisture. Dove Scalp + Hair Therapy Hydrating Shampoo gently cleanses your hair while leaving it beautifully soft and smooth, and it won’t be harsh on the scalp.

  • Turn down the heat.

    Turn down the heat.

Overusing heat can sometimes result in scalp dryness, like showering in very hot water as well as using hair dryers, which can cause heat damage and dry out your scalp. Try cutting down and see if it makes a difference.

  • Hydration, hydration, hydration.

    6

    Hydration, hydration, hydration.

For a healthy scalp and thicker hair, keeping your body hydrated is essential. Make sure you’re drinking enough water (between 8 and 10 glasses), so your body can replenish any lost moisture.
