Elizabeth, 28, Poet

Born with a head of vibrantly curly hair, Elizabeth never had the chance to embrace it as she grew up. She was taught that straight hair was a sign of elegance and sophistication, and curly hair - was not. So she would always straighten it, but never really feel like her true self.

It was only later when Elizabeth discovered poetry that she began using her words to speak out against the beauty standards in society, and question why only straight hair is associated with beauty. Her poem Hair went viral after it resonated with women across the country – and it was an awakening for her, too.

Today, Elizabeth wears her hair natural and curly. She is proud of her wild curls and the journey she took to love them.
