How to Help Get Rid of Dandruff

What is dandruff?

Dandruff is flaking skin on the scalp that causes itching. While it is harmless, white flakes on your hair and clothing can be embarrassing, inconvenient, or both. According to the Canadian Dermatology Association (CDA), dandruff and itchy scalp tends to get worse in dry winter climates with lower humidity. In the summer, where humidity is usually high, dandruff conditions may improve. So yes, seasonal dandruff is definitely a thing.

What causes dandruff?

The Canadian Dermatology Association says that the underlying reason for dandruff is dry skin resulting from dry hair. Another frequent cause is a condition called seborrheic dermatitis—which is science speak for oily scalp. This oily scalp condition, “may contain an abundance of yeast and leads to large white flakes or yellow scales from the uneven shedding and clumping of dead skin cells,” the CDA says.

Facts about dandruff courtesy of the Canadian Dermatology Association

About 50 per cent of North Americans have dandruff. It is most common in younger people and resolves by middle age, but the condition can return later in life. More men have dandruff than women which could be attributed to men having hormones that produce more active oil glands and an oilier scalp.

Should you see a dermatologist if you have dandruff?

As mentioned before, dandruff is typically a harmless condition, but the CDA says that you should consult a dermatologist for a medical prescription if you are experiencing an itchy scalp that persists despite using dandruff shampoo for several weeks, redness and/or swelling of the scalp.

How to treat dandruff and flakes

Dove dandruff-control shampoo and conditioner system systems uses a milder active ingredient called Pyrithione Zinc to prevent dandruff and associated symptoms such as irritation and itching. Pyrithione zinc acts as an anti-fungal agent and reduces the activity of the Malassezia microbe, the microbe known to produce irritants leading to the production of extra skin cells, which appear as dandruff flakes.
