Boosting self-esteem with the Women’s Dermatologic Society

When it comes to confidence, everyone has both good and bad days – and our appearance can play a huge part. Through our work with the Women’s Dermatologic Society, we’re helping young people to love what they see in the mirror every day.

It’s no secret that our skin can have a real effect on our confidence, especially for young people with skin conditions such as acne. The Women’s Dermatologic Society is committed to issues relevant to women and their families – and through our partnership, we aim to help young people to know that self-esteem and beauty goes beyond skin-deep.

Here’s how. First, a downloadable toolkit just for doctors to use with patients with skin and body image concerns. Second, by working alongside experts from the Centre for Appearance Research at the University of the West of England, the Dove Self-Esteem Project and Women’s Dermatologic Society have created a range of videos called ‘Confidence Talks’. Dealing with both the practical side of skin care – such as skin care routines, or acne myths – and the emotional side of body confidence, like being faced with unrealistic images in the media and receiving hurtful comments, these videos are a go-to for young people with skin conditions: helping them to feel confident in their skin.

“As dermatologists, we see how skin conditions negatively affect self-esteem every day. We are always looking for ways to broach the conversation which can usher treatment into a place where both the skin and soul can heal,” Dr Mona Gohara, New Haven says. “Confidence Talks makes this task easy. A hip, relatable and informative series, this collaborative project changed the way I relate to my patients who struggle with acne and low self-esteem.”

Dr. Jeannette Jakus, a pediatric dermatologist in Brooklyn, New York, agrees. “Watching the Confidence Talks videos has given me insight into the day-to-day struggles teens with acne face that allows me to better understand and connect with my young patients. Likewise, these videos provide a supportive, friendly teen-focused approach to managing the physical and emotional aspects of skin care, so that no one should ever feel alone.”
