Introdução alimentar é o termo usado para designar a fase em que a alimentação dos bebês começa a incorporar outros alimentos além do leite materno (ou fórmula infantil no caso das mamães que não conseguem amamentar). Ela deve ser iniciada no 6º mês de vida, conforme recomendação da Organização Mundial de Saúde (OMS) e do Ministério da Saúde. Até essa idade, o aleitamento materno deve ser exclusivo e não há necessidade de nenhum outro alimento, nem mesmo água, pois o leite da mãe supre todas as necessidades de hidratação do bebê.
Aos 6 meses, recomenda-se começar a introdução de outros alimentos na dieta paralelamente ao aleitamento, que deve continuar até os 2 anos de idade. Nos casos em que a mãe não pode amamentar, pode-se recorrer a fórmulas infantis, mas, nesse caso, é importante procurar orientação do pediatra para saber qual a melhor conduta a seguir em cada caso. A alimentação complementar deve ser introduzida de maneira lenta e gradual.
Alguns bebês podem estranhar no início e recusar determinados alimentos, o que é normal, pois trata-se de uma experiência totalmente nova para eles. Se o bebê não aceitar um alimento, não insista, não force nem tente agradá-lo, pois a recusa é normal. O importante é que esse mesmo alimento seja oferecido outras vezes até que ele se acostume com o sabor e a textura e defina se de fato não gosta.
Segundo informações do Ministério da Saúde, é necessário oferecer o mesmo alimento de oito a dez vezes, em média, até que a criança o aceite.
