Dove Takes Action Against Climate Change: Our Forest Restoration Project

As a brand that has helped progress the conversation around beauty for nearly two decades, Dove is now committing its scale and resources to take further action against climate change.

We’ve joined forces with Conservation International, which works in 30 countries around the world to protect the critical benefits that nature provides to people. And together, we’re working to restore the beauty of our planet through the Dove Forest Restoration Project. To help tackle climate change, we will protect and restore 20,000 hectares (an area approximately double the size of Paris and the equivalent of +3 million trees) of forest in North Sumatra, Indonesia, over the next five years.

Our mission forms part of an industry-leading initiative from the Unilever Climate & Nature Fund – a €1bn commitment to regenerate nature and take meaningful and decisive action. This project is also the first step in Unilever’s commitment to help protect and regenerate 1.5 million hectares of land, forest and oceans by 2030 – more land than is required to grow the renewable ingredients in Unilever’s beauty and personal care products.

“When a brand like Dove puts climate change and nature at the heart of its purpose, the impact is game-changing. Together, Dove, Conservation International and Indonesia’s leadership will build on the work we have started with Unilever to protect and restore this region, its wildlife, and support its communities. I look forward to continuing to create conservation success together in Indonesia. Investments like the Dove Forest Restoration Project are essential to changing the trajectory of the planet for the next generation.” - Notes M. Sanjayan, CEO of Conservation International.

In line with the UN Decade on Ecosystem Restoration – the global movement to restore our world – the Dove Forest Restoration Project is an extension of our longstanding commitments to both people and the planet, including:

Restoring forests for a stable climate

We’re committed to protecting and restoring the beauty of the planet for everyone by:

  • Capturing over 300,000 tons of CO2 from the air and avoiding the release of over 200,000 tons of CO2e emissions
  • Accelerating ongoing plans to achieve a deforestation-free supply chain by 2023 and net zero emissions from all of our products by 2039

But we also know that to be truly sustainable, we need to help sustain communities, including the people and wildlife who call North Sumatra home.

Improving livelihoods

Not only are the forests a stabilising force for the climate, they protect biodiversity and the North Sumatran community, too. Protecting and restoring 20,000 hectares of forest (the equivalent of over 3 million trees) will support local communities with the aim of improving the livelihoods of 16,000 people in the North Sumatra region by:

  • Creating opportunities for rural farming communities to establish land tenure through social forestry licenses
  • Fostering alternative livelihoods and community empowerment through the establishment of forest nurseries
  • Strengthening the livelihoods of smallholders through technical support and training

This work will complement Unilever's engagement in the Coalition of Sustainable Livelihoods partnership, which also aims to accelerate sustainable economic development in North Sumatra.

Protecting wildlife

Protecting and restoring some of the largest natural forests in North Sumatra will also deliver biodiversity benefits such as the protection and restoration of habitats of many endangered species including the Sumatran Tiger, Sunda Pangolin,  Sumatran Clouded Leopard, Malayan Tapir,  Black Sumatran Langur and Sambar Deer. Not only will re-established forest cover have a positive impact for communities and wildlife, it will also reduce the impact of natural disasters such as flooding and landslides.
